Play Bark Range Explained and Compared
All of our Play Bark are tested to BS EN 1177:2018 by Labosport Ltd at a critical fall height above 3m, test reports LSUK.21-0107-J1, I1 and H1. They come in various grades from 18 to 35mm to 30 to 60mm.
The everyday choice for a home play area. Screened to keep fines under 5% and white wood low, so it stays clean underfoot without paying deluxe money. 18 to 35mm · BS EN 1177:2018
My pick for nurseries, schools and any play area that has to stay tidy. Under 1% white wood, virtually no fines, and the longest rated life in the range. 18 to 35mm · BS EN 1177:2018
The chunky grade at a sensible price. Big pieces stay put and track far less indoors than finer bark, and they work as a border mulch too. 30 to 60mm · BS EN 1177:2018
Choose this where the play area has to look good as well as work. Extra screening takes out most of the dust and white wood, so it stays cleaner for longer. 35 to 45mm · BS EN 1177:2018
Over my 15+ years installing safe, natural surfacing for family gardens and commercial play zones across London, the South East and West, I’ve gone to high-quality pine-based play bark time and again because nothing beats its combination of impact cushioning, natural look, and low-maintenance qualities for our moody weather. The non-toxic nature of bark also makes it superior for me when comparing to rubber play bark.
Our Play Bark range includes four options: the best value Pine Play Bark for everyday domestic and council-standard safety, the premium Deluxe Pine Play Area Bark in 18-35mm with superior cleanliness and longevity, and two chunky nugget grades, Pine Play Nuggets in 30-60mm and the extra-screened Deluxe Pine Play Nuggets in 35-45mm, which last longest of all and double as a decorative mulch. Each delivers excellent fall protection when laid to the right depth, suppresses weeds effectively, and holds that fresh pine aroma season after season. Whether you’re creating a secure play area under swings or refreshing borders with visual impact, these FSC-regulated products give consistent results. Read on for my hands-on take on each of our products.

Why Professionals & Homeowners Choose Our Play Bark
Play bark transforms risky hard surfaces into soft, forgiving zones that look inviting and stay functional year-round, even through heavy rain and foot traffic. From a multitude of jobs using these aggregates, here are the results:
- Proven impact absorption: At 300mm under a climbing frame, it cushions years of active play without compacting.
- Long-lasting durability: The Deluxe Pine Play Area Bark outlasts lesser options by 2+ years in heavy use.
- Minimal fines: The Deluxe grades give off far less dust, so less tracking indoors and fewer splinters.
- Weed suppression: Over a membrane it keeps borders moist and saves years of weeding.
- Natural, child-safe appeal: Non-toxic, aromatic and soft underfoot, even in damp conditions.

Here are some examples from previous installations:

Pine Play Bark
Our more budget-friendly pine play bark delivers a clean, reddish finish with that classic fresh scent I always love to smell when raking it. It’s screened to keep fines under 5% and white wood low.
- Sizing: 18-35mm
- Tested with a critical fall height greater than 3m.
- Lasts 4-6 years at recommended depths.
- Holds up through winters without turning to mush.
- Pleasant aroma and no staining on clothes.

Deluxe Pine Play Area Bark
For higher-end projects, this deluxe version stands out with under 1% white wood and virtually no fines, giving a noticeably tidier, more ornamental appearance.
- Sizing: 18-35mm
- Superior longevity (5-8 years expected) and BS EN 1177 compliance, ideal for prestigious play areas.
- Exceptional cleanliness reduces tracking and maintenance.
- Rich reddish-brown tone with pleasant pine aroma adds decorative value to play bark setups.
Deluxe Pine Play Nuggets
The premium chunky grade, and my pick where a play area has to look good as well as work. Extra screening takes out most of the dust and white wood, so it stays cleaner and lasts longer than the standard nugget.
- Sizing: 35-45mm
- Tested with a critical fall height greater than 3m.
- Chunky pieces break down slowly and barely travel indoors on shoes and socks.
- Doubles as a long-lasting decorative mulch on borders.
- Non-staining with a pleasant pine smell.

Pine Play Nuggets
The same chunky nugget at a better price, with the same fall safety certification. It skips the extra screening the deluxe grade gets, so expect a little more white wood in the bag.
- Sizing: 30-60mm
- Tested with a critical fall height greater than 3m.
- Lasts 4-6 years at recommended depths.
- Chunky pieces stay put and track far less than finer grades.
- Works as a border mulch or informal path surface too.
Play chips are the other certified play surface we stock, and the hardwood and softwood play chip comparison covers how those finer 10 to 30mm grades differ on lifespan. If the bark is going on borders and beds rather than under equipment, the decorative bark grades are the better match, as they are chosen for looks rather than fall protection.
Applications
Across this play bark range, the warm reddish tones pair beautifully with perennials like hardy geraniums, lavender, echinacea, and heuchera for vibrant, low-care contrast in borders or around play structures. The organic texture softens edges and complements natural planting schemes. The range isn’t suited to very high-traffic driveways or areas needing firm, wheeled access. If you are weighing this range up against ordinary garden bark for the same spot, play bark against normal garden bark sets out what the certification does and does not cover.

- Play areas, swings and climbing frames: any grade in this range, laid at 100mm minimum for certified fall safety and deeper for margin as the surface compacts.
- Commercial playgrounds and nurseries: Deluxe Pine Play Area Bark for cleaner, longer-lasting performance.
- Ornamental garden borders and beds: Deluxe Pine Play Nuggets or Pine Play Nuggets for long-lasting mulch coverage.
- Weed suppression: any of the range over membrane, with the Deluxe options lasting longest.
- Pathways or seating zones: Pine Play Bark for softer, aromatic walking surfaces.
- Ground cover for pet areas: standard Pine Play Bark for cushioning and hygiene.

The difference is in production and testing, not looks. Only one of them comes certified.
How to Look After a Play Bark Surface
Lay play bark over a weed membrane on firmed, levelled ground to maximise weed control from the outset. Give the surface a light rake every spring and after heavy leaf fall to keep it looking fresh. Because it’s organic, expect to top it up every 12-24 months as the top layer breaks down and feeds the soil beneath.
What to Check Before Ordering Play Bark
Batches can vary slightly, so it’s best to be prepared for some natural variation. Try to get what you need in the one load. Measure your area in square metres, and size it to the whole area a child can fall onto rather than the footprint of the frame, which is one of the decisions to settle before you build a play area. Our play bark calculator turns those measurements into a bag count and adds the settlement allowance for you.

Play Bark FAQs
What depth should I use for play bark in a domestic garden?
Our play bark is certified at 100mm deep for falls up to 3m, the highest compliant play equipment allows. At home I lay 150mm or more, because bark compacts and gets kicked out from under swings, and extra depth is your margin.
Is play bark suitable for wet UK winters?
Yes, pine bark options drain freely and resist frost, staying usable even after heavy rain. I’ve seen proper installations hold up without puddling or breakdown for years, though annual raking helps maintain the surface.
How does Deluxe Pine Play Area Bark compare to standard Pine Play Bark?
The deluxe has far lower white wood (under 1%) and minimal fines for better drainage, cleaner appearance, and 1-2 extra years of life. Choose it for premium looks or high-visibility play zones; standard works fine for budget-friendly everyday use.
Should I choose play bark or play nuggets?
Choose the 18-35mm play bark for younger children, because it beds down evenly and is kinder underfoot. Choose the chunky nuggets for longevity and less mess, because they break down slower and barely travel indoors. All four grades carry the same fall safety certification.
How long do play bark chippings last?
At proper depths, expect 4-6 years for standard and up to 5-8 for deluxe versions with basic maintenance. In my past projects, annual top-ups keep it performing well beyond that.
What’s the best play bark for weed suppression in borders?
Any work well over membrane, but the chunky nugget grades excel for long-term coverage in ornamental beds thanks to their size and screening.
