10mm Gravel

10mm gravel is our finest decorative grade: smooth, rounded pea shingle in natural mixed shades that darken nicely when it rains. It gives the softest underfoot feel of anything we sell, which is the whole case for it, and that softness is also why it rolls more than the coarser grades. Good for:
- borders, pots and planted beds
- light garden paths over a firm base
- paver and crazy-paving joints
- pipe bedding, soakaway fill and clean French drain backfill
- concrete mixing
Laid thin and kept somewhere it cannot escape, this is the most forgiving stone in the range to walk on. It is not the size to reach for on a drive or a slope, check our driveway gravel for that.

Overview
Aside from our play gravel, 10mm is the smallest gravel we sell, and it earns its place on comfort and aesthetic appeal. I use it wherever bare feet or garden chairs will actually touch it: pots, borders, a seating corner. The stones are mostly rounded rather than crushed, smooth quartzite pea shingle in mixed buffs, greys and browns that pick up a bit of shine and colour once wet. Because it is rounded and this fine, it moves more than any other sizes we stock, so it wants an edge or a container to sit in rather than an open run. Below is what it is actually good at, and where a coarser grade beats it.

10mm earns its keep on feel, not load, and that is worth being upfront about.
- It is the softest gravel in the range underfoot, which is the real reason to choose it over anything coarser for a seating area or a path near a pool.
- Water drains straight through it, so it works as well in a border as it does bedding a drainage pipe.
- The colour lifts once it rains, the same buffs and greys deepening with a bit of warmth.
- Under about 10mm, loose gravel gets stuck in shoe treads and walks indoors. This grade sits right at that line, so a doormat earns its keep on any path finishing at a door.
- Rounded stone this small migrates fastest of anything we sell. It needs edging, a pot rim or a joint to sit in, and it is the wrong choice for a drive or anything on a slope.

The smooth, rounded shape and pale quartz tones suit soft, drought-tolerant planting: catmint (Nepeta racemosa), thrift (Armeria maritima), sedum and sea holly (Eryngium bourgatii) all read well against it, and the stone keeps the crown of the plant dry through a wet winter the way an organic mulch cannot. Skip it for drives and anywhere children will run about, where a play-safe grade from our play surfaces range is the right call instead.
- Garden paths take it at 40 to 50mm over a membrane, on a light-traffic route with a firm edge to hold it.
- Pond and water-feature edges work well in 10mm, since it sits low and neutral against planting without drawing the eye.
- Planter bases are the one place gravel genuinely helps: a layer at the bottom improves the look, though it does not improve drainage the way people assume, so keep any drainage fix in the compost itself.
- Border edging in 10mm gives a fine, tidy line, provided the bed has a proper edge to stop it migrating into the lawn.
- Dry streambeds suit the size and colour range, mixed through coarser stone for a natural, weathered look.

How you handle weeds depends on the setup: on a decorative bed, lay it straight onto the soil before after removing all weeds and roots and then rake lightly every few months to redistribute.
