Overview
I've been hauling and laying Cotswold chippings since the early days of my landscaping career, and this classic limestone aggregate from the heart of Gloucestershire's quarries never fails to deliver that timeless English garden quality. In dry weather, it shows a soft, creamy buff with subtle golden flecks that blend effortlessly into traditional borders and patios; come rain, it deepens to a richer honey-gold tone that really brings the space alive. We stock the 20mm Cotswold gravel, a chunky grade that locks together beautifully for stable, long-lasting surfaces that handle foot traffic and light vehicle use while allowing excellent drainage. Why Professionals & Homeowners Choose Cotswold Chippings
Our Coswold chippings stay remarkably consistent in colour year-round, with that signature warm buff hue that weathers gracefully. From dozens of jobs across the country, here are the standout results:
- Excellent Compaction & Stability: The angular pieces knit tightly underfoot or tyre, although it can tend to crumble under heavier traffic over time.
- Superior Drainage: Permeable structure prevents puddling with minimal standing water issues when installed correctly.
- Timeless Aesthetic: The creamy-gold tones complement Cotswold-style cottages and modern extensions alike - no harsh glare, just subtly that ages gracefully.
- Weed suppression: When installed properly, it smothers weeds effectively - I've seen borders virtually maintenance-free for years.
- Not Fish-Friendly: The dolomitic stone affects pH and is not suitable to aquatic life, like limestone.

Here are some examples from previous installations:

Applications
The warm buff-to-gold shades of these limestone Cotswold chippings pair wonderfully with plants that thrive in neutral-to-alkaline conditions, such as lavender, salvia, echinacea, and catmint - their purples and pinks burst vividly against the creamy background without clashing. Avoid using Cotswold chippings near acid-loving plants (like rhododendrons or blueberries) or in fish ponds/aquatic features, as the natural limestone can raise pH levels over time, so it is not fish-friendly.

- Driveways & Parking Areas - Our 20mm size for best compaction and load-bearing; it creates a solid, permeable surface that stands up to family cars.
- Garden Paths & Walkways - Provides a comfortable walking texture without being too coarse, but more so over time as it gently crumbles on sharp edges.
- Decorative Borders & Mulch - Suppress weeds and retain soil moisture and makes the planting look instantly established.
- Rockeries & Alpine Features - Use pieces to mimic natural scree and set off low-growing alpines beautifully in sun.
- Patio & Seating Area Surrounds - The chunky 20mm fills gaps around flagstones or decking edges for a clean, cohesive look.

DIY Guides
Get the depths, base and drainage right, and a gravel drive will outlast the car parked on it.
And which popular cleaners like vinegar quietly ruin limestone and marble surfaces.
Maintenance
How you handle weeds depends on the setup: on a decorative bed, lay it straight onto the soil before after removing all weeds and roots and then rake lightly every few months to redistribute. On a paving area or driveway, a heavy duty membrane goes over the compacted sub-base instead. For deep cleaning, particularly where algae discolours the chippings, check our guide on how to clean chippings for step-by-step tips.
Purchasing Tips
Quarry batches can vary slightly in the different shades, so it’s best to be prepared for some natural variation. Try to get what you need in the one load. Measure your area in square metres and the use our gravel calculator to get an accurate order.

FAQs
Is Cotswold chippings the same as Cotswold gold gravel or Cotswold buff gravel?
Yes, Cotswold chippings, Cotswold gold gravel, Cotswold buff gravel, and Cotswold stone gravel all refer to this warm-toned limestone aggregate; the "gold" or "buff" simply highlights the richer honey-cream shades that appear.
Is Cotswold gravel suitable for driveways?
Yes, the 20mm Cotswold gravel compacts well and supports regular car traffic when laid properly at 40mm over a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. However, be prepared for some additional settling, particularly where heavier cars are concerned.
Do Cotswold chippings change colour when wet?
Yes, Cotswold chippings dry, show a soft creamy buff with golden hints; after rain, Cotswold chippings deepen to a warmer, more vibrant honey-gold that enhances the overall look without drastic shifts.
Can I use Cotswold gravel around ponds or water features?
I wouldn't recommend it for fish ponds or direct aquatic use, as the limestone is naturally alkaline and can gradually affect water pH; it's fine for surrounding dry areas or pondless features though. For the stones that are safe right at the water's edge, see my guide to edging a pond.
What depth should I lay Cotswold chippings 20mm?
Cotswold chippings 20mm wants roughly 40mm of depth on paths and driveways, and 5 to 7.5cm on planted borders. Deeper is not stronger: loose gravel much over twice its own grade size ruts under tyres and slides underfoot. Use a membrane underneath to stop the gravel punching down into the soil, though it will not stop windblown seed germinating in the surface.
Is Cotswold stone weed-resistant?
When Cotswold stone is installed correctly at an adequate depth, it greatly reduces weed growth; occasional raking keeps things tidy.
