Overview

Eco Value Topsoil is the grade I reach for when a job needs volume rather than finish. It is our entry-level blended loam: screened natural topsoil mixed with composted green material, put through a 10mm screen and tested to the BS 3882:2015 multipurpose grade (certificate on request). The texture sits in the sandy loam to loamy sand range, so it barrows and rakes easily, drains freely and warms quickly in spring. Screened to 10mm is not the same as stone-free, so expect the odd stone. Filling, levelling, building a root zone under turf, topping up a border that has dropped: that is the work this soil is for, and there are a few reasons it holds up at the price.

Eco Value Topsoil Applications

On a free-draining loam like this I plant the things that would rather be dry than damp. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), catmint (Nepeta racemosa), yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and the hardy cranesbills (Geranium) all do well in it, as does ordinary shrub and herbaceous planting once the bed is deep enough. What it will not grow is acid-lovers: rhododendron, camellia, pieris and blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) need acid ground, so those go into Ericaceous Topsoil. It is not for a sports pitch or fine turf rootzone either.

  • New beds and borders, worked into the top 150 to 200mm rather than laid on as a slab.
  • Raised beds at 250 to 300mm, which is enough for all ornamentals and most vegetables.
  • Turfing and seeding at 100mm minimum, or 150mm over subsoil, onto ground loosened first.
  • Levelling dips in an existing lawn, no more than 20mm at a time, so the grass grows through instead of being smothered.
  • Backfilling round new trees and shrubs, mixed with the soil out of the hole rather than used neat, so roots have a reason to leave the pit.
  • Topping up borders that have sunk over the years, 75 to 150mm.

Eco Value Topsoil Maintenance

Eco Value Topsoil holds its fertility for roughly two growing seasons, then wants feeding like any other soil. The composted fraction breaks down over about two years, and the sandy end of the texture lets nutrients wash through faster than a clay would. I put 25 to 40 litres of well-rotted organic matter per square metre onto beds each year, or a mulch layer of about 5cm, and let the worms take it down. The timing that works is late winter or early spring, before the ground dries out. A bark or wood chip mulch over a newly filled bed also knocks back the weed seedlings that come with any imported soil.

Purchasing Tips

A builders bag holds roughly 700 litres, which is 0.7 cubic metres. That covers about 14m² at 50mm deep, 7m² at 100mm or 4.6m² at 150mm, and a 2.4m by 1.2m raised bed filled to 300mm takes about 0.9m³, so a bag and a bit. Work your own job out on the topsoil calculator, then add ten per cent, because soil settles. A full bag is the best part of a tonne, so it comes kerbside and wants breaking into barrow loads rather than standing on a lawn or a new patio. Can you grow vegetables in Eco Value Topsoil?

Eco Value Topsoil is listed as compliant for allotment use and for residential gardens with home-grown produce, so vegetables are fine in it. Vegetable Topsoil is blended specifically for cropping if the bed is purely for food.

Is Eco Value Topsoil suitable for rhododendrons and acid-loving plants?

Eco Value Topsoil is a multipurpose grade and is not suitable for acid-loving plants. Rhododendrons, camellias, pieris and blueberries need acid ground, and Ericaceous Topsoil is blended to pH 4 to 6 for that job.

What is the difference between topsoil and compost?

Topsoil is mineral ground, sand, silt and clay, with organic matter mixed through it, and it holds plants up as well as feeding them. Compost is decomposed organic matter with no mineral structure, so it improves soil rather than replaces it.
