Golden Self Binding Gravel gives you a path that looks like gravel but walks like a pavement. Graded from 0-10mm, once it is spread and compacted locks together into a firm surface. Prams, wheelchairs, bikes and wheelbarrows roll across it without rutting or scattering stone.

Overview

Golden self binding gravel is a 0-10mm limestone path mix graded right down to dust, and the dust is the clever part: dampen it, compact it and it sets into one firm golden layer. The colour stays golden whether wet or dry. It suits anyone laying a garden path, a walkway or a bridleway who wants something tidier than loose gravel for a lot less money than paving. Here is why it earns its place.

Why Professionals & Homeowners Choose Golden Self Binding Gravel

Golden self binding gravel sets into a firm path without cement or resin, but it needs a week or two to harden before regular use.

  • A golden self-binding gravel path stays where you laid it; no stones kicked into the borders or raked back off the lawn every weekend.
  • Most gravels darken and dull in the rain; golden self binding gravel keeps the same colour, wet or dry.
  • No cement or resin goes into it so the path can be dug up, raked out and re-laid somewhere else if needed.
  • Weeds seed into the top of the surface rather than pushing up through a properly built base, and a spring-time rake lifts them out while they are small.
  • Patience is part of the price: a new path needs about a week to set in summer, and two weeks+ in winter.
  • Self-binding gravel is not free-draining, because rain runs off the bound surface instead of soaking through it. That is why the base under it has to be laid to a fall.

Golden Self Binding Gravel Applications

Golden stone flatters soft, silvery planting. I love it running between English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and catmint (Nepeta × faassenii), with lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis) flopping over the edge to soften the line. One place it is not suitable for is a low area of the garden where water already collects. Once it's compacted, rain can't soak through, and if it can't run off to the side it just sits on top. Water left sitting on the surface softens it into potholes.

  • Garden paths and walkways on foot traffic, finished over a compacted MOT Type 1 base.
  • Bridleways and rural tracks.
  • Side returns and bin stores, where wheels get stuck and scatter loose gravel.
  • Courtyards and patio surrounds (though dragging the chairs scuffs the top).
  • Informal paths through lawns and looser planting where paving would look too hard.

Golden Self Binding Gravel Maintenance

Golden self binding gravel needs the most care in its first three months, while the bind is still hardening. Keep bikes from skidding on it and avoid turning a loaded barrow on the spot during that time. Deal with a scuff or a pothole the week it appears, because water collects in the dip and softens the surface around it. Dig the damaged patch out, refill it with fresh material, dampen it and tamp it level with the rest.

Purchasing Tips

Golden self binding gravel comes in 850kg bulk bags, and a path 1m wide and 10m long takes two of them at the finished 50mm. When you use our gravel calculator, enter 7.5cm, the depth you spread it at before compacting, rather than the finished 5cm, and pick the 10% allowance.

Underneath goes 75 to 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1, laid with a cross-fall of about 1 in 50 so rain runs off. On a wider area such as a courtyard, make that 1 in 40. The gravel goes straight onto the compacted MOT Type 1 with nothing in between. If you want a weed membrane in the build, it goes under the sub-base. Our guide to laying a sub-base takes you through it.

Golden Self Binding Gravel FAQs

Is golden self binding gravel suitable for a driveway?

Golden self-binding gravel is supplied for paths, walkways and bridleways rather than driveways, so give us a ring before you lay it anywhere cars will park.

Can golden self binding gravel be used on a bridleway?

Golden self binding gravel is supplied for bridleways as well as paths and walkways, and on a route horses use, the drainage matters especially. Build it over a proper MOT Type 1 base laid to a fall, because water left sitting on the surface softens into potholes.

Can golden self-binding gravel be used near a pond?

Golden self binding gravel should be kept away from fish and wildlife ponds because limestone is alkaline and not fish-friendly. Where a path runs beside a pond, set its fall so rain drains away from the water.

Does golden self binding gravel stick to shoes?

Golden self binding gravel does stick to wet shoes, mostly while the surface is new and still dusty. It calms down as the surface weathers but a good doormat at the back door is worth having.
