Green compost is garden waste composted hot and screened to 0 to 10mm, so it goes on as a fine dark crumb and blends easily into a bed. Dry it is mid brown; wet it turns close to black. It suits heavy clay, tired borders and hard-cropped vegetable plots, and it’s the cheapest bulk soil improver we sell. It is not a potting compost and it is alkaline, so it earns its keep as a bed improver rather than an all-rounder.
The reasons come down to what it does in the ground and what it costs by the cubic metre.
I use green compost hardest on the greedy feeders: roses (Rosa), brassicas such as cabbage and kale (Brassica oleracea), courgettes (Cucurbita pepo) and potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), and on any clay border. Keep it away from acid lovers, rhododendrons (Rhododendron), camellias (Camellia japonica), blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) and pieris (Pieris japonica), because it sits at pH 8 to 8.5. Do not sow seed into it or pot with it, because it is too alkaline and too coarse for young roots.
How I identify garden soils that need improving or removing.
The garden mulches I rate after years of use, and the depths and methodologies that work.
Green compost needs no looking after; the soil does. Top up with 2.5 to 5cm once a year, autumn on clay and late winter on light soil, then once the soil is crumbly, drop to every second year. Keep it off waterlogged ground until the drainage is sorted, since organic matter in standing water sours rather than feeds.
Green compost goes on at 5cm whether you dig it in or leave it as a mulch, and 5cm takes 50 litres per square metre. Every bag count below is built on that.
Anything over 10 square metres is a bulk bag job. You cannot judge it from the photograph, so go by the spec: 0 to 10mm, pH 8 to 8.5, PAS 100. Expect the odd fleck of plastic, the price of a recycled input, and pick it out as you rake. A bulk bag cannot be moved once it is delivered so choose the drop spot before the lorry arrives.
On sticky clay or a bed destined for cabbages and kale, our Mushroom Compost is the one I reach for first; coarser, with a little straw fibre that opens clay up, and enough chalk to keep club root down.

Green compost is made from garden waste; the hedge cuttings, grass, prunings and leaves collected at kerbside and recycling centres, composted at high temperature and screened to 0 to 10mm. Nothing in the bag comes from peat or food waste.
Green compost is a soil improver, not a growing medium, and that is the whole difference. Multi-purpose compost is blended for pots and seed trays, where green compost is too alkaline and too coarse.
Green compost sits at pH 8 to 8.5, so it is the wrong choice for rhododendrons, camellias, blueberries and heathers, which want pH 5 to 5.5. Use an ericaceous compost around those.
Green compost at the 5cm depth I recommend takes 50 litres per square metre, so a 700 litre builders bag covers about 14 square metres and a 1,000 litre bulk bag about 20.
Green compost certified to PAS 100 has been held above 60°C long enough to kill weed seed and plant disease, and the finished product is tested for germinating seeds. The odd seedling can still blow in after you spread it, which is not the same thing.
Green compost is the better buy for a clay border or an allotment on a budget, and mushroom compost is the better buy where the mulch also needs to hold down weeds. Both are alkaline, and mushroom compost carries lime as well, so it needs the most caution on chalk.
