Slate mini mulch wants around 5cm in a border, which is the depth at which stone genuinely blocks enough light to hold weeds down. On a path the same material goes thinner, nearer 2.5cm, following the rule that loose stone is laid to roughly twice its grade size before it starts shifting underfoot.
