Overview

Topsoil is the material people order last and regret first. I have opened up too many gardens where the planting was thought through to the last plant and the stuff underneath was building spoil with green waste stirred in. Our Premium Topsoil is a fine sandy loam screened to 10mm, blended with PAS100 certified compost, and compliant with BS 3882:2015 multipurpose grade. It looks how good topsoil should look, dark and crumbly rather than grey and claggy. The high sand content gives it a measured drainage rate of 92mm an hour, so new turf roots into it fast and nothing sits with wet feet over winter.

Why Professionals & Homeowners Choose Premium Topsoil

The differences between one topsoil and another barely show in a photograph, so the specification is what to read instead.

  • Screening to 10mm sits inside the 20mm maximum stone size BS 3882 recommends for formal recreation surfaces, the category a domestic lawn falls into.
  • A drainage rate of 92mm an hour keeps new turf out of standing water through a wet February, which is where many lawns are lost.
  • Blending with PAS100 certified compost puts the organic matter in on day one rather than leaving you to dig it in afterwards.
  • The compliance list runs past the British Standard to the land uses that matter in a garden, including residential with home grown produce and allotment.
  • It is peat free, which I treat as a baseline now rather than a selling point.
  • Weigh against all that the fact that a free draining sandy loam gives water back as easily as it takes it, so on a hot exposed site it dries faster than a heavier soil and wants mulching.

Premium Topsoil Applications

Premium topsoil suits anything wanting a free draining, moderately fertile root zone, which is most of a normal garden. What it is not is an ericaceous soil. Multipurpose grade permits a pH anywhere between 5.5 and 8.5, so rhododendrons, camellias and blueberries want 4.5 to 5.5 and a compost of their own.

  • New lawns from turf or seed, worked to a total depth of 100 to 150mm of decent soil.
  • Levelling an existing lawn, as a dressing of 25mm or less so the grass grows back through it.
  • Beds and borders, at 150 to 200mm for annuals and perennials.
  • Raised beds at 200 to 300mm, depending on what is going in them.
  • Tree and shrub planting, blended with the soil that came out of the hole rather than used neat, since roots that meet a ring of imported soil often stay inside it.

Premium Topsoil Maintenance

Fresh topsoil settles, so the depth you rake out is not the depth you end up with. Allow 10 to 20 per cent extra on the order and top up the low spots a few weeks later, once watering has done its work. After that it is the same regime as any light soil: 2 to 5cm of compost or well-rotted manure into the top 15 to 20cm each year, in late winter or early spring. Mulch the beds once the soil has warmed, which is what stops a sandy loam drying out in July, and check the pH every couple of years.

Purchasing Tips

Premium topsoil is bought sight unseen, so the screening size, the drainage figure and the compliance list are what to read as opposed to the photograph. The builders bag holds roughly 700 litres, which covers about 6m² at 100mm once it has settled, and about 4m² at 150mm. The 25L bags are there for jobs a bulk bag would overshoot: a 2.4m by 1.2m raised bed filled to 300mm takes about 860 litres, so one builders bag plus a pack of ten rather than two bulk bags. Run your own figures through the topsoil calculator. One last thing: be careful comparing us against merchants pricing by the tonne. A tonne of topsoil is not a fixed volume, and bulk density varies enough that the same weight can arrive as a noticeably different heap.

Premium Topsoil FAQs

How deep should premium topsoil be for a new lawn?

Premium topsoil goes down to a total depth of 100 to 150mm under a new lawn, counting any decent soil already there. Where the ground below is cultivated and reasonable you are only importing the difference. On compacted new build clay, work to 150mm and break up the ground underneath first, or you’ll have built a shallow tray.

How much premium topsoil is in a builders bag and what does it cover?

A builders bag of premium topsoil holds roughly 700 litres, which covers about 6m² at 100mm deep once it has settled. The same bag does about 4m² at 150mm, or around 28m² spread as a 25mm levelling dressing. Allow 10 to 20 per cent on top of the bare calculation.

Can you grow vegetables in premium topsoil?

Premium topsoil is cleared for food growing, with allotment and residential with home grown produce both on its compliance list. For a bed given over to vegetables I would still use our Vegetable Topsoil, which carries more organic matter, is ready to plant straight into and is declared free of aminopyralid.

Is premium topsoil suitable for rhododendrons and other ericaceous plants?

Premium topsoil suits most planting but not rhododendrons, camellias or blueberries, which need a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. Multipurpose grade permits anything from 5.5 to 8.5, so acid lovers want an ericaceous topsoil or compost in a bed or planting pocket of their own.

What is the difference between premium topsoil and landscaping topsoil?

Premium topsoil is a finer sandy loam screened to 10mm, while our Landscaping Topsoil is a sandy clay loam screened to 20mm. Premium suits lawns, seeding and smaller jobs and comes in 25L bags as well as bulk. Landscaping holds moisture better and comes in one 850kg bag, which suits larger planting schemes.

Can you put premium topsoil straight on top of an existing lawn?

Premium topsoil spread over an existing lawn works as a levelling dressing at 25mm or less, where the grass grows back up through it. Anything over about 50mm blocks the light and kills the turf underneath. To build up more than that, lift the turf first and relay it.
