Overview

Red Self-Binding Gravel is the finest grade in our self-binding range at 0-6mm: crushed red granite with its own dust left in, and when that dust is dampened and rolled it locks the whole layer firm. The stone is Cresta, from Cloburn Quarry near Lanark, which is also laid on tennis courts and running tracks. Dry, it is a warm brick red; after rain it goes darker, with a slight sheen. It is made for garden paths, seating areas and anyone after colour underfoot without paying for paving. Here is what it gets right, and what to plan around.

Why Professionals & Homeowners Choose Red Self-Binding Gravel

Red self binding gravel is bought for its colour and its finish, here is why:

  • Once rolled, red self binding gravel takes pushchairs, bikes and wheelbarrows without rutting.
  • Very few path surfaces give you red at this price.
  • Nothing but stone dust holds it together, so a path in the wrong place can be lifted with a spade and laid again elsewhere.
  • Weeds arrive as windblown seed landing on top rather than pushing through a sound base.
  • Granite keeps its colour for good, because the red runs right through the stone.
  • The top stays a little dusty even once it’s rolled hard and red dust on wet boots shows on pale carpet.

Red Self-Binding Gravel Applications

Red stone looks its best against silver and lime-green foliage. I love it edged with cotton lavender (Santolina chamaecyparissus), Mexican feather grass (Stipa tenuissima), and the acid-yellow heads of Mediterranean spurge (Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii). The one backdrop I steer people away from is new red facing brick, where the two reds fight each other. It is made for feet, bikes and barrows, which makes it the wrong choice for a drive, and it wants gradients gentler than roughly 1 in 15.

  • Garden paths laid to a 50mm finish on a firm MOT Type 1 base.
  • Side returns and bin runs, where wheelie bins and tyres get stuck in loose gravel.
  • Step-free routes for wheelchair users, on level or near-level ground.
  • A red route through a grey or buff gravel garden, a bold path choice.

Red Self-Binding Gravel Maintenance

Red self binding gravel needs very little looking after, and most of what it does need falls in autumn. Clear fallen leaves weekly through October and November, because leaves left to rot on the surface become exactly the fine compost that weed seed germinates in. In March or April, scratch up any rutted or scuffed patch, wet it and firm it back with a hand tamper or roller. Doorways and gates usually want a thin 5 to 10mm top up each year, firmed the same way. Never use a pressure washer on this path. The jet blasts out the fine dust, and that dust is what holds the path together.

Purchasing Tips

Red self binding gravel is finished at 50mm on a path, which means spreading roughly 75mm loose and rolling it down. At £164, an 850kg bulk bag of Red Self-Binding Gravel from Outdoor Aggregates covers about 7m² at that finished depth, so two bags do a path 10m long and 1m leaving a sensible margin for wastage, uneven ground or topping up. Our gravel calculator works from the depth you type in, so give it 7.5cm, the loose depth, with the 10% allowance selected.

Beneath the gravel you need a firm bed of MOT Type 1, 75 to 100mm deep once compacted, set with a fall of around 1 in 40 across the width so water sheds to one edge. The sub-base guide takes you through the dig and the compaction.

Stone from any quarry shifts slightly between batches, and on a red path a shade difference shows, so buy every bag for the job in a single order. The self-binding gravel range page puts Red next to Buff, Golconda and Golden on grade, colour and traffic, and every self binding gravel we stock is in the shop.

If you would rather talk your red self-binding gravel order through with a person, ring Outdoor Aggregates on 0330 043 7585. The office is open 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.

Red Self-Binding Gravel FAQs

What is red self binding gravel made of?

Red self binding gravel is crushed red granite, graded from 6mm down to fine dust. Ours is Cresta, quarried by Cloburn near Lanark in Scotland. The colour runs right through the stone, and the dust is what binds the path when it is rolled.

Is red self binding gravel suitable for a driveway?

Red self binding gravel is a fine granite surfacing made for paths, tennis courts and running tracks, and it lacks the coarser stone a drive needs to carry car wheels. For parking, Outdoor Aggregates sells Buff and Golconda as the 0-10mm grades for domestic cars.

Does red self binding gravel change colour when wet?

Red self binding gravel goes from a warm brick red when dry to a darker, slightly glossy red when wet. A long dry spell can leave a dull film of dust on top, and the first shower brings the colour back.

Does red self binding gravel go with a red brick house?

Red self binding gravel tends to clash with new red facing brick, because two strong reds side by side fight for attention. Against render, grey stone, timber or a green lawn it glows, and beside a red brick wall our Buff or Golconda grades usually sit more happily.
